For all your track equipment needs...

We have a range of hiking/tramping equipment available for rental throughout the great walks season.

Our weekly rate is for a period of up to 7 days.

Rental prices

When walking in an alpine area, the weather can change and turn wet and cold at any time so it is essential that you are prepared with the correct equipment and clothing. Kiwi Discovery have a range of hiking equipment to rent out. Why not hire your hiking gear if you don't need it for the rest of your travels?

For your safety and comfort, it is essential to take the recommended gear.

What to take?

 

Clothing

You will need at least one set of clothes to walk in, and a dry set of clothes to change into at night. There are no facilities to dry clothes in the huts. Cotton such as jeans, t-shirts and sweatshirts take a long time to dry and are NOT suitable. Polypropylene and quick dry clothing is recommended.

  • Raincoat (hooded, windproof and waterproof).
  • Over trousers (windproof and waterproof).
  • Hat and gloves (yes it can be cold in the evenings).
  • Trousers x 2 (warm and fast drying).
  • Shirt/top x 2 (fast drying).
  • Good walking boots (broken in).
  • Thermal underwear.
  • Sunhat.
  • Socks.
  • Insect repellent.
  • Toiletries.
  • First aid kit.

Equipment

  • Eating utensils - cup, spoon, knife, bowl or plate.
  • Cooking utensils - pot/billy.
  • Sleeping bag.
  • Packliner (keeps your clothing dry).
  • Matches.
  • Torch and spare batteries.
  • Water bottle.
  • Emergency equpiment (whistle, high energy food, survival blanket).
  • Food (take an extra days rations in case you have to stay an unexpected night due to flooding, snow or injury).

Optional recommended Items

  • Quickdry shorts.
  • Earplugs.
  • Candles.
  • Camera.
  • Book or cards.

Food

You should always take extra food in case you have any delays on the track, for example flooding, snow or an injury. There are no facilites to buy food on the tracks.

The staff in the Kiwi Discovery shop can help with ideas on what to take and the supermarkets in both Te Anau and Queenstown open until late to purchase adequate supplies before you set off.
